Doggie OatsThis recipe is from Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. Dr. Pitcairn believes that oats are a good choice of grain in cooking for pets. Not only are oats quick-cooking, but they contain more protein per calorie than any other common grain. It’s best to add some variety by substituting other grains at times (as recommended). That’s because each grain varies in its amino acid composition and its vitamin and mineral levels.
This dog food recipe can be used in the daily diet for dogs. This recipe will provide a fresh, home-prepared meal full of nutrition. My Dogs love this recipe!
Doggie Oats
This maintenance recipe for adult dogs ranges in protein value from about 22% (using fattier meats or tofu with bulghur) to 30% (using turkey with oats).
8 cups raw rolled oats (or 16 cups cooked oatmeal)
2 pounds (4 cups raw ground or chopped turkey
½ cup Healthy Powder
¼ cup vegetable oil
1 cup cooked vegetables (or less if raw and grated)
3 Tablespoons bonemeal (or 5,400-6,000 milligrams calcium or 1 tablespoon eggshell powder)
10,000 IU vitamin A (optional if using carrots)
400 IU vitamin E
1 teaspoon tamari soy sauce or ¼ teaspoon iodized salt (optional)
1-2 cloves garlic, crushed or minced (optional)
15 milligrams iron (optional)
Bring 1 gallon (16 cups) of water to a boil. Add the oats, cover and turn off the heat, letting the oats cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until soft. Don’t stir while cooking or the oats will become mushy. Then combine with the remaining ingredients and serve.
Yield: About 22 cups, with 205 kilocalories per cup.
Daily ration (in cups):
Toy: 2/3 to 2 2/3 cups
Small: 2 2/3 to 5 1/3 cups
Medium: 5 1/3 to 7 cups
Large 7 to 9 cups
Giant 9 ¾ to 14 2/3 cups
Grain substitutes: Instead of oats, you may use 4 cups of bulgur (add 8 – 12 cups water). If you are using poultry or lean cuts of beef, you may also use these lower-protein grains: 4 cups millet (add 12 cups water); 3 cups brown rice (add 6 cups water)
4 cups cornmeal (add 16 cups water)
4 cups barley (add 8 – 12 cups water)
The higher-protein grains are necessary to provide adequate amounts of protein.
Meat Substitutes: Instead of turkey, try chicken, hamburger, chuck, or beef heart; lean or medium grades are okay, but don’t use fattier meats.
Other Substitutes: If you use oats or bulghur, you may occasionally substitute either of the following for the meat: 2 pints cottage cheese plus 4 eggs, or 32 ounces of tofu plus 8 eggs. Add the eggs while the grain is still hot so they’ll set slightly and give the best texture.
